  * Executed as Design Director for Rafael Viñoly Architects / Courtesy of Rafael Viñoly Architects The new Mathematical Institute building for Oxford University is an academic research and faculty building located at the heart of historical Oxford. Surrounded by five ‘Grade II*’ listed buildings and fronting Woodstock Road, the scheme is located at the most prominent position within the ROQ masterplan, functioning as landmark and key point of access for the overall complex. Responding to historical views and neighbouring listed buildings, the bulk and massing was carefully defined to provide the best possible relationship with its notorious historical setting. The scheme comprises 300+ academic offices over 5 levels above ground level, as well as lecture, seminar and teaching areas in a generously planned, naturally lit basement.
