_SCHWARZES HAUS Hamburg, Germany Private Residence | 260 sq m Concept 2016 This project aims to transform a standardised 1960s suburban detached house into the house and gallery of an introverted artist. The challenge lies in the ambition to preserve the existing structure whilst converting internal layouts and proportions entirely, to suit the new user’s need for privacy and seclusion. A new staircase ‘spine’ is introduced, reorganising the house’s layout and connecting it to the enlarged and upgraded garage building, connected to the main house through a proposed bridging glazed corridor. The proposed double height living room area, opens towards the upper floor’s new gallery space. An extension of the basement level extends the user’s offices into a private sculptural courtyard, protected from views from the neighbours.
